Moving Checklist

Moving doesn't have to be overwhelming. Use this week-by-week checklist to stay organized and stress-free from the moment you decide to move until you're settled into your new home.

8 Weeks Before

  • Start decluttering — donate, sell, or discard items you no longer need
  • Research moving companies and request quotes
  • Set your moving budget
  • Begin collecting free boxes from local stores
  • Notify your employer of your upcoming move if relocation is involved
  • Research schools, utilities, and services in your new area

6 Weeks Before

  • Book your moving company (Box Truck Boys!) and confirm your move date
  • Order packing supplies — boxes, tape, bubble wrap, packing paper
  • Start packing non-essential items (seasonal items, books, décor)
  • Notify your landlord or list your current home for sale
  • Begin transferring medical, dental, and school records
  • Update your address with the post office (USPS Change of Address)

4 Weeks Before

  • Notify banks, insurance providers, and subscription services of your new address
  • Schedule utility disconnection at your current home
  • Schedule utility connection at your new home (electric, gas, water, internet)
  • Continue packing room by room — label every box clearly
  • Arrange care for children and pets on moving day
  • Confirm moving date and details with Box Truck Boys

2 Weeks Before

  • Pack all but essential daily-use items
  • Defrost and clean your refrigerator and freezer
  • Disassemble large furniture if needed
  • Confirm parking and elevator access at both locations
  • Prepare an essentials box (toiletries, chargers, snacks, important docs)
  • Return borrowed items and collect anything you've lent out

Moving Day

  • Do a final walkthrough of every room, closet, cabinet, and drawer
  • Check attic, basement, garage, and outdoor areas
  • Take photos of all rooms before leaving for your records
  • Hand off keys, garage openers, and any access cards
  • Confirm the Box Truck Boys crew has your new address and contact number
  • Keep your essentials box with you — not on the truck
  • Sign off on the move and tip your crew if they did a great job!

After the Move

  • Update your driver's license and vehicle registration
  • Register to vote at your new address
  • Unpack essentials first — bedroom, bathroom, kitchen
  • Inspect all items for damage and report any issues promptly
  • Introduce yourself to your new neighbors
  • Explore your new neighborhood and find your go-to spots
